Night Passage
by Robert B. Parker

The first Jesse Stone novel. He is fired from LAPD homicide for drunkenness and hired as police chief in Paradise, Massachusetts, because they want a harmless lush. Fortunately, he receives lots of clues and ultimately confessions that allow him to arrest two men responsible for four murders. The plot relies on luck, but still makes you root for Stone. It is an enjoyable, quick read with humorous dialog by Stone who was played by Tom Selleck in the made-for-TV movies.
