Silver Star
by Sterling Silliphant

A novel about a soldier of fortune named John Locke who returns to communist Viet Nam to extract his son, who he has just learned of. He is a macho American veteran of the Vietnam war. He fell for a native and got her pregnant. She turns out to be the poet laureate of the country and the daughter of the head of security for the Hanoi regime. She died two years before the story begins. The boy, now 9 years old, is being raised by his communist grandfather. The preparations for the mission take place in Bangkok and occupy most of the book. Locke and his friends are all macho soldiers and hard to be interest in.
