The Amateur Marriage
by Anne Tyler

A novel written by an omniscient story teller about a Baltimore couple who marry at age 21, have 3 kids, and divorce at age 51. He is inflexible, principled, and dull. She is emotional, fun loving, and bright. Their oldest child, a daughter, runs away at age 17. The couple travels to San Francisco a few years later and brings back her 3-year-old son and raises him. The prodigal daughter returns 20 years later to see her son, after no communication with her family in all these years. Very good portraits of the characters, their inner thoughts, and their representative conversations and actions. A keeper.
