The Californios
by Louis L’Amour

A horror story set in 1844 California. An Irish family is about to lose their Malibu ranch for failure to repay loans. A girl who doesn’t want to marry the rich man chosen for her by her uncle flees from Mexico aboard the schooner owned by the son of the woman with the Malibu ranch. They seek out an old Indian to guide them through the desert to a place where the deceased father of the family had obtained gold twice before. The place is haunted by ancient Indians and is some sort of a portal through time.
