The Declaration of Independence
by Carl Becker

A well written history of the declaration. The best chapters are the ones on the philosophical background of the revolution and the subsequent development of natural rights philosophy in the aftermath of the French Revolution led by German idealists and American slave holders.

The original draft of the declaration condemned King George for encouraging slavery in the colonies, but this paragraph was deleted at the request of the delegates from South Carolina and Georgia.

Year Read: 1974
