The Devastators
by Donald Hamilton

The 9th novel told by assassin, Matt Helm. He is assigned to kill a scientist who is making virulent microbes and threatening to cause a pandemic. The story takes place in England and Scotland. The Russian, Chinese, and British governments all have spies looking for this scientist. Helm is pretending to be in London on his honeymoon. He is supposed to become bait to attract those who are working with and financing the mad scientist and his “bride” is then supposed to perform the actual assassination. However, she gets kidnapped early in the story and doesn’t reappear until it’s over. Meanwhile a female, Russian spy and a group of Chinese agents drive the story. I liked this one better than some of the other stories because Helm’s mission is worthwhile.

Year Read: 2005
