The Eighteenth Century Background
by Basil Willey

An excellent explanation of the philosophical thinking in England in the 18th century, especially with regard to nature.

It seems silly that this whole book is a prelude to an explanation of the poetry of William Wordsworth. That is, the only reason we need to understand the thinking of the greatest minds of the century is so that we can make sense of some stupid poems.
