The Ferguson Rifle
by Louis L’Amour

A good western novel set in 1804 or so. The story is told by Ronan Chantry. Ferguson himself gave him his rifle when Ronan was a boy. The main part of the story begins when he goes west by himself after his wife and son were killed in a house fire outside of Boston. He meets a group of mountain men and hooks up with them. They rescue a young woman who is being chased by men who believe she knows where treasure is hidden in the Rockies.
