The first Mike Hammer mystery, and supposedly one of the best. Hammer,
for my money, is the main villain in this story. He is an ignorant, obnoxious thug.
He is a stupid version of a Randian hero: quick to judge, cock-sure of himself,
stubborn, and usually wrong. He thinks he is a man of principle dealing honestly
with reality, but he is actually a man acting on old-fashioned biases who doesn’t
have the intellectual capacity or the imagination to check his premises. His moral
code is that of a Mafia goon.
