Love and Glory
by Robert B. Parker

A novel about a jerk who becomes obsessed with a pretty girl in college. He gets kicked out of college, drafted, and sent to Korea. They exchange love letters until she sends him a dear John letter and marries someone else. After getting out of the army he gets fired from a series of jobs for being a jerk. He becomes an alcoholic bum for a few years. He decides to make himself worthy of the girl who jilted him. He straightens himself out and returns to college where her husband is a professor and she is a mother and a graduate student. Not a keeper.
