Modern Times
by Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson's Modern Times is a history of the world from the 1920s to the 1990s. So many millions of people have been murdered by totalitarian states and in wars in this century, that my problems seem trivial. Lenin and Stalin killed about 10,000,000 people to create the classless utopia of Soviet socialism. Hitler killed almost as many people to purify Europe and pave the way for the culture of the Master Race. Meanwhile Chinese warlords such as Chang Kai-shek and Mao Tse-tung we busy fighting against each other and against invading warlords from Japan, slaughtering millions of Chinese peasants in the process. During World War II the liberal democracies reacted by sending arms and material to the Chinese warlords and to Stalin and by waging a war of terror against the people of Germany and Japan by fire-bombing major population centers and finally by rushing to develop the atomic bomb and blowing up Hiroshima and the Christian city of Nagasaki before the Japanese could sign surrender papers.
