The Ravagers
by Donald Hamilton

The 8th novel told by assassin, Matt Helm. He is assigned to make sure a foreign spy escapes with secret information and thereby falls into a trap. He is authorized to kill anyone who jeopardizes this objective. He murders an agent of his own government and threatens others. As usual the women in the story throw themselves at him.

There are similarities in the Matt Helm stories and the Louis L’Amour westerns. Fast pace, 140 pages or so, explanations of the profession and tricks of the trade. The hero gets the girl in the end. The hero is tough and tall and macho. Well written. Hard boiled. Amoral.

Year Read: 2005
