A Savage Place
by Robert B. Parker

A Spenser novel set in LA. He is hired by a TV news station to be the bodyguard for a pretty reporter investigating ties between the mob and a movie company. He cheats on Susan by screwing the reporter. He fails to protect her and she is murdered. He beats up the men who killed her and holds them hostage for the police. The DA wants to prosecute him to the full extent of the law. A local detective sympathizes with Spenser and drives him to the airport. The dialog between Spenser and the girl reporter at the beginning of the story is funny.
