The Voice of the Night
by Dean Koontz

A suspense novel told by God about a nerdy, 14-year-old boy who becomes friends with a popular boy named Roy who is secretly a sadistic murderer. Roy tries to corrupt the nerd. He seems to be succeeding for 2/3 of the story and so there are no good characters to sympathize with and root for, but then the nerd turns out to have morals and he stops Roy from causing a train wreck. From this point Roy is trying to kill the nerd for betraying him and the excitement builds and we now care about the outcome.
